A self introduction for students does not need to impress anyone. It needs to help a room of new people remember your name, where you are from and one thing that makes you easy to talk to later.
Below you will find a simple format, eight student self introduction samples in English for college, school and presentations, a student biography template for class projects, and the mistakes that make introductions forgettable. Younger children have their own page on self introduction for kids.

Self introduction for students: a simple format in English
Most class introductions follow the same order. Fill each row with your own details and you have a ready answer.
| Step | What to cover | Sample line |
|---|---|---|
| Greeting and name | A short hello and your first name | "Hi everyone, I am Shreya." |
| Where you are from | City, town or previous school | "I am from Wardha, about an hour from here." |
| Course or class | What you are studying now | "I have joined the computer science branch." |
| Why this subject | One honest reason | "I liked building small circuits at home." |
| Something personal | A hobby or interest | "I sketch old doorways in my free time." |
| A hook | An invitation or goal | "If you want a study partner, find me." |
The last row is the one most students skip. It gives classmates a reason to come and talk to you after class.
Self introduction in English for college students: 4 samples
Each self introduction in college below suits a different setting. They show how to introduce yourself in college without sounding rehearsed, and none of them mention marks or percentages.
First day of college: B.Sc Physics student in Nagpur
Hi everyone, I am Shreya. I am from Wardha, about an hour from here, and I finished Class 12 at a state board school there. I chose physics because I liked building small circuits at home and wanted to understand why they worked. I am staying in the girls' hostel, so if anyone from the hostel wants a study partner for the first semester, please find me. In my free time I sketch buildings and old doorways.
Engineering first year orientation: computer science student
Good morning. My name is Vikram, I am from Jaipur, and I have joined the computer science branch. I wrote my first program in Class 9 to keep score in our colony cricket matches, and I have been curious about software since then. I am not very good at public speaking yet, which is one reason I want to join the debate club here. I also play the tabla, so I may turn up at the cultural society auditions.
MBA class introduction: student with one year of work experience
Hello, I am Zoya. I studied economics in Lucknow and then worked for a year as a research intern at a small market survey firm. That year showed me how much I enjoy talking to customers and turning messy survey notes into a clear story, so I am planning to specialise in marketing. Outside class, I run, mostly badly, and I would love company for early morning jogs around the campus.
30 second sample: introducing yourself in a lecture with 120 students
I am Kunal, first year B.Com, from Rajkot. I enjoy accounts more than I expected to, I follow the share market as a hobby, and I hope to sit for the company secretary exams later.
How to introduce yourself in class at school
Senior school students are usually asked to introduce themselves on the first day of a new session, in a new section or when they join mid year. Keep it to five or six sentences and look at the class, not the floor.
Class 11 student joining a new school
Good morning, ma'am and everyone. My name is Pooja and I have just joined this school in Class 11 science. My family moved from Bhopal last month because of my father's transfer, so this city is new to me. I like biology most and I want to become a physiotherapist. I play basketball and I hope to try out for the school team. I would be grateful if someone could tell me where the library is.
Class 9 student in an English speaking class
Hello, I am Aman and I am fourteen years old. I live in Ranchi with my parents and my younger brother. My favourite subject is history because I like stories about old kingdoms. I am in this English class because I want to speak more confidently in front of people. My hobby is making paper models of forts.
How to introduce yourself in a presentation as a student
A presentation introduction is different. The audience wants to know who is speaking and what they will get from the next few minutes, so your hobbies can wait.
- Greet the audience and say your name and class.
- For a group, name each member and their part.
- State the topic in one plain sentence.
- Say how long you will speak and what you will cover.
- Tell them when you will take questions.
Opening a group project presentation
Good afternoon. We are Group 4: I am Rohit, and with me are Fatima, Nikhil and Grace. Our topic is water use in our college hostels. I will explain how we collected data, Fatima will share the results, and Nikhil and Grace will present our suggestions. We will take questions at the end.
Solo seminar introduction for a final year student
Good morning, everyone. I am Kavitha, final year B.Tech civil engineering. Today I will talk for ten minutes on low cost housing using fly ash bricks, a topic I picked after my internship at a construction site in Hosur. I will cover what these bricks are, how strong they are, and why builders still hesitate to use them.
Student biography template for a class project
Teachers often ask students to write a short biography of themselves for a portfolio, notice board or the first page of a project file. Use this template and write in the third person.
Template: short student biography
[Name] is a [class or year] student at [school or college] in [city]. [He or she or they] enjoy [subject] and [hobby]. [Name] has [one achievement or activity]. In the future, [name] hopes to [goal].
Filled example: biography of a student for a portfolio
Ishaan is a Class 10 student in Dehradun. He enjoys geography and spends weekends hiking with his uncle in the hills nearby. Ishaan represented his school at a district level quiz and organised a cleanliness drive in his colony. He hopes to study environmental science and work on forest conservation.
For biography project ideas such as a bottle biography project or a body biography project on a famous person, the job is research rather than self introduction. That process is covered step by step in how to write a biography, with completed samples on the biography examples page.
Self introduction questions for students to prepare
Some teachers turn introductions into a question round. Be ready with one line for each of these:
- What is your full name and what do people call you?
- Which school or college did you come from?
- Why did you choose this course or stream?
- What do you do when you are not studying?
- What is one thing you want to get better at this year?
- What would you like to do after you graduate?
You do not have to answer all of them. Pick the three that are most interesting about you.
Common mistakes students make
- Reading out marks. Your percentage is not interesting to classmates and may sound like boasting.
- Saying "myself Rahul". Say "I am Rahul" or "My name is Rahul".
- Too many hobbies. "Reading, music, travelling, cricket, cooking" sounds like a form. One hobby with a detail is better.
- Speaking too fast. Nerves make everyone rush. Pause after your name.
- Copying a classmate's answer. If the person before you says the same thing, change your hook.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good length for a student introduction?
In a normal class, 30 to 60 seconds is enough, which is five to eight sentences. In a large lecture hall where everyone takes a turn, keep it to name, course, hometown and one interest.
Should I mention my marks or rank when introducing myself in college?
Usually no. Classmates and teachers will learn about your work over time. Talk about why you chose the subject instead, which tells people more about you.
What if I am too shy to speak in front of the class?
Prepare four sentences in advance and practise them once aloud. Look at one friendly face while you speak. Short and clear is perfectly fine.
What is a good hook to end my introduction?
Invite people to connect with you about something specific, such as a sport, a club or a study group. It gives classmates an easy way to start a conversation later.
Is a student biography the same as a self introduction?
Not quite. A self introduction is spoken and in the first person. A student biography is written, usually in the third person, and is used in portfolios and project files.
How to introduce yourself in English as a student when your English is weak?
Use short, simple sentences you are sure of, like "I am from Patna" and "I like chemistry". Clear simple English is much better than long sentences with mistakes.
